Cross holes, flats, slots and hexagons no longer need a second machine. Doing them while the part is still in the first clamping removes a cost and an error at the same time.

In automotive, the part is the easy half. The documentation, the capability evidence and the ability to hold both for seven years are what separate a supplier who wins the tender from one who only quotes it.
Almost every fitting in a hydraulic, pneumatic or plumbing assembly is a turned part. The geometry — round, threaded at both ends, hollow, with a hex in the middle — is what a lathe does better than anything else.
A hydraulic component fails in ways a bracket never does. Pressure, sealing surfaces and a single loose chip decide whether the part works — and all three are settled on the lathe, not in assembly.
