IATF 16949: why we hold it, and how a certificate like this is obtained

IATF 16949 is the automotive industry's quality standard. It is not a badge you buy — it is a three-year audit cycle that decides whether a supplier may quote at all. Here is what it asks for and what it took us to get it.

Every automotive part we ship leaves the building under IATF 16949. Customers ask for the certificate before they ask for a price, and for good reason: it is the single fastest way to find out whether a supplier can run a part for years without surprises.

What the standard actually is

IATF 16949 builds on ISO 9001 and adds what the car industry learned the hard way. Where ISO 9001 asks whether you have a quality system, IATF asks whether your process is capable — whether it will still hold the tolerance on the ten-thousandth part, on a Friday night, on a machine nobody is standing next to.

In practice it demands things ISO 9001 leaves optional: process FMEA, control plans tied to that FMEA, machine and process capability studies, measurement system analysis, traceability from the mill certificate to the packed box, a defined reaction when a characteristic drifts, and documented supplier management for everything bought in.

Why we hold it

Roughly speaking, the automotive industry is the reason our machine park looks the way it does. A customer who needs half a million shafts a year cannot audit every supplier in depth, so the certificate does the first round of filtering. Without it, a quotation is often not even read.

The second reason is internal. The discipline the standard forces — measure, record, react, prove — is what makes it possible to run sliding head automatics unattended overnight and know in the morning what happened.

How it is obtained

  • Build the system first. Certification audits what exists; there is nothing to audit until FMEAs, control plans and capability records are real and in use.
  • Twelve months of evidence. The certification body wants a full cycle of data — internal audits, management review, customer complaints and what was done about them.
  • Stage 1 and Stage 2 audits. The first checks readiness on paper, the second checks the shop floor against it.
  • Surveillance every year, recertification every three. A major nonconformity that is not closed in time withdraws the certificate.

Our certificate

Ours is issued by TÜV SÜD Management Service GmbH, registration no. 12 111 53069 TMS, IATF certificate no. 0494036, IATF USI 6WK2ZC, for the production of precision machined components — product design excluded, because we machine to the customer's drawing. Alongside it we hold DIN EN ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015.
