Turned components for hydraulics and pneumatics: what the application really demands
A hydraulic component fails in ways a bracket never does. Pressure, sealing surfaces and a single loose chip decide whether the part works — and all three are settled on the lathe, not in assembly.
Hydraulics and pneumatics are among the industries we machine for every week, and they are unforgiving in a specific way. A part that is a tenth out on a visible face is a cosmetic problem. A part that is a tenth out on a sealing seat is a leak, and a leak in a hydraulic circuit is a machine standing still.
What actually decides the part
- The sealing surface. Roughness and freedom from spiral marks matter more than the diameter tolerance. An O-ring seals against a surface, not against a dimension.
- Cross holes without burrs. A burr left in a bore travels. In a hydraulic circuit it ends up in a valve, and the complaint arrives from the vehicle, not from goods-in.
- Technical cleanliness. Particle counts are specified in this industry for a reason. We wash in an ultrasonic degreasing plant before packing, and the washing step is part of the process, not an afterthought.
- Thread quality. A fitting is tightened to torque, often more than once in its life. Rolled threads survive that better than cut threads.
Materials we run for it
Free-cutting and case-hardening steel for bodies and pistons, stainless V2A and V4A where the medium or the environment demands it, and brass for fittings and small valve parts. Aluminium where weight matters. The material is usually specified by the customer's own standard, and we buy it from European mills with a certificate that stays attached to the batch.
Why these parts suit sliding head machines
Hydraulic and pneumatic parts tend to be slender, threaded at both ends, with cross holes and a sealing feature somewhere along the length. That is precisely the geometry a sliding head automatic handles in one setup — turned, drilled, milled and parted off without a second clamping to introduce a new error.
